Huacachina, an oasis in the dunes
A little village built around an oasis in the middle of a desert. In contrary to the many stone deserts you ll drive through in Peru, this desert is made of massive sand dunes. In fact they ought to be the tallest sand dunes in the world. As soon as you enter the city and see the green lagoon, the village built around it, and the surrounding huge sand dunes, you might feel like you’re experiencing a real life fata morgana.
Buggy sand dune trip and sanboarding
If you visit Huacachina, you must book a sand dune trip which includes their famous sandboarding. The town is full of colorful sand buggies which can take 4 up to 12 people. Those buggies look as if they came straight out of the Mad Max movies and when they take you up for an adrenaline ride in the dunes, that is probably the closest you ll ever get to becoming Max himself.
book a sandboarding trip
When you book a sand dune trip, make sure you get the sandboards included. You can rent the sandboards by themselves, but you ll have to walk up the dunes yourself. I can tell you from experience that this is not the best idea. Walking up a sand dune is though. Each step forward (or should I say upwards) will slide back almost half way down again due to the loose sand you’re walking on. Include the burning desert sun and the weight of the sandboard, and you’ll get yourself a though workout. Although you should try walking (crawling) up a sand dune yourself, just for the experience, those buggies were designed for it, so there is absolutely no shame in it to just getting the tour.
The tour costs around 50 Peruvian Soles, which comes down to around 12 US Dollar. This 2hour trip includes a crazy adrenaline buggy ride in the sand dunes, 3 to 4 downhill sandboarding rides and an amazing sunset on top of a huge sand dune. This was by far the best-value-for-money-trip I have ever experienced. Do not miss out onthis !!!
